2.30 - 3.30 Guest Speaker - Derek Wenmoth

Derek is currently the Director of eLearning CORE Education Ltd, a not-for-profit educational research and development organization based in Christchurch, New Zealand. He has a broad background in education, with experience as a teacher and principal at the primary and secondary school level, and in teacher education.
His experience in flexible and distance learning includes a role as manager of the eSection at The Correspondence School in Wellington where he led the development of eLearning initiatives as a transition from traditional print-based delivery. He is currently vice president of the Distance Education Association of New Zealand.
He's also worked with the Ministry of Education as a senior adviser in eLearning, helping formulate a national eLearning framework, and he currently spends some of his time on contract to the Ministry working on the implementation plan for this framework.
He is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars, and maintains a blog as a place to keep track of and share ideas and thinking across a range of areas relating to the use of ICT in teaching and learning.
He shares an intense interest in re-conceptualising education for the 21st Century, and in 2008he became one of the George Lucas Foundation’s “Global Six” – awarded to educators who are recognised for reshaping the future of education.

1. Read It! Write It! Say It! In your literacy programme (Swannanoa)
Integrating Oral, Visual and Written Language using ICTs. Exploring Web 2.0 tools that support and integrate literacy in classroom programmes

2. The Power of the Pen (St Josephs)
This presentation aims to share a range of practical ideas and examples of how both teachers and students can make the most of their Activboard within their literacy programme. Using audio and video discover ways to hand over the 'power of the pen' to your students. Although more suited to interactive board users these ideas could be modified for use with other ICT.

3. Literacy Alive through eBooks (Southbrook)
Discover a treasure trove of online books available at your finger-tips for your classroom use. Extend visual and oral language practically. You will find out exactly where to explore for a further wealth of resources, picture books, audio books, myths & legends, poetry, and non-fiction resources, all freely available online to fit your programme.

4. Traditional Tales with a Digital Twist (Ashley)
Motivate students and improve literacy using traditional tales, thinking tools, digital mechanisms and online resources. This breakout will look at reading collections of Classic Traditional Tales online as well as creating your own Traditional Tales.

5. Everyone's a Superhero! (Ashgrove)
A grassroots presentation about the integration of ICT into your classroom writing programme. This breakout will look at planning, writing and publishing recounts with the help of Comic Life.
